Take Surrey and Hampshire's
truly beautiful Basingstoke Canal and add Galleon Marine's fleet of
holiday craft and you have the perfect combination for that idyllic short break
or full length holiday.
Our location near J5 of the M3, together with good
parking facilities makes it easy for companies based in the South of England to
organise a corporate event such as a team building short break in one or more
of our boats with a good choice of pubs along the way.
Galleon Marine offer
a range of narrowboats from 2 to 8 berths to suit most requirements, all fitted
to a high standard for your comfort and convenience.
Galleon Marine has
been under new management since April 2000. Jim and Jan Peile have taken up
ownership of the only holiday hire company on the Basingstoke Canal and have
plenty of enthusiasm and pride in providing that personal service to ensure
that you enjoy your holiday to the full with modern narrowboats, designed and
especially built to meet both the requirements of the holiday maker and the
environmental considerations of this beautiful and historic
waterway.
Novice Friendly
Surrey and Hampshire’s beautiful Basingstoke canal is ideal for people new to this wonderful relaxing type of holiday. It is a very quiet canal with none of the problems you sometimes encounter on busier canals. Also on a short break you only have to negotiate one lock and you have plenty of time to get used to the handling of the boat before you reach it.
We are located approximately 30 miles south of London and 30 miles north of the South coast. If you want to come by train we are on a direct rail route from Waterloo to Hook (40 mins). There is a supermarket next to Hook station and you can even call a taxi from there to get to the base (about 10 mins away). Leave the stress of the city behind – come and enjoy a peaceful, relaxing break with us.

Basingstoke
Canal.
The Basingstoke Canal was constructed 200 years ago and opened in
1794 to carry agricultural produce from Basingstoke to London via the rivers
Wey and Thames. It passes through wonderful countryside in Surrey and
Hampshire. By the mid 1960's the Canal had fallen derelict and the campaign for
restoration began. Today the Canal is in public ownership with 32 miles and 29
locks from King John's Castle to the Wey Navigation, restored and linked once
again into the 2,000 miles of British inland waterways. 1995 saw the opening of
a new Aqueduct at Ash over the new A331 road.
A major accolade was awarded to the Basingstoke Canal in
September 1994, when the vast majority of the canal was designated a "Site of
Special and Scientific Interest" (S.S.S.I.), acknowledging the Canal's
reputation as an outstanding site for aquatic plant life, animal life and
dragonfly habitat. Canal cruising is for those in no hurry to get anywhere,
2mph - not 4mph - is recommended for maximum enjoyment, so relax, take your
time and unwind gently while you absorb the many and varied beauties which
abound on this tranquil and unspoilt waterway.

has recently written an article about the Basingstoke Canal which can be
